Wall Street opened lower Wednesday after the hotter inflation report, with investors also weighing more big bank earnings (Reuters).
The opening numbers
Reuters had the Dow down 85.11 points, or 0.16%, at the open to 51,584.99, the S&P 500 down 0.40% to 7,774.18 and the Nasdaq down 0.63% to 27,031.64. AP said the S&P 500 was on track for a fifth loss in the six days since its record high, and that stocks felt pressure from rising bond yields. For Tuesday's close, see the Dusk Ledger.
What had been expected
Futures were slightly higher before the report, with AI-linked stocks steadying after a selloff (Reuters; see our Toast & Tickers). The hot CPI reading reversed that tone.
